Margherita Pizza Recipe: A Classic Italian Favorite

Description
Margherita pizza is a true symbol of Italy, known for its simple ingredients that perfectly reflect the colors of the Italian flag—red, white, and green. It is said to have been named after Queen Margherita of Savoy during a visit to Naples in the late 19th century. Legend has it that the pizza was created by a local chef who wanted to represent the Italian flag with fresh tomatoes (red), mozzarella (white), and basil (green). This classic pizza is loved around the world for its delicious yet minimalist flavors and remains a staple in Italian pizzerias.

Ingredients

  • 1 pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup of tomato sauce (preferably crushed San Marzano tomatoes)
  • 1 ½ cups fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves (about 10-12)
  • Extra virgin olive oil (for drizzling)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Process

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) if using a pizza stone or baking sheet. Let the stone heat for about 20 minutes if you’re using one.
  2. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it reaches your desired thickness. Transfer it to a baking sheet or pizza stone.
  3. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving about an inch from the edge for the crust.
  4. Add the mozzarella slices on top of the sauce, making sure the cheese is evenly distributed.
  5. Bake the pizza in the oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
  6. Remove from the oven and immediately top with fresh basil leaves.
  7. Drizzle a bit of olive oil over the pizza and sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  8. Slice and serve while hot for the best flavor experience.
